Preparing for Tummy Tuck Surgery
By undergoing tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, you can eliminate loose, drooping skin around your midsection and achieve a more youthful figure. In order to help you experience optimal results, Dr. Jason K. Potter will provide detailed instructions about preparing for tummy tuck surgery at his Dallas, TX, practice and support you throughout the entire course of planning, treatment, and recovery. Pre-surgical Instructions
Before undergoing a body contouring procedure like abdominoplasty, you will first hold a tummy tuck consultation with Dr. Potter to personalize your treatment and ensure you understand the surgical process. During this meeting, Dr. Potter will provide clear instructions based on your medical history and the specific type of tummy tuck surgery that will be performed. In general, there are some basic guidelines tummy tuck patients should take when preparing for surgery. These include:
Refrain from Smoking
Tobacco increases the risk of complications and slows healing, so smokers (including those who only smoke occasionally) must completely stop using tobacco for at least six weeks prior to surgery and continue to abstain from use until a minimum of two weeks after their procedure.
Avoid Certain Medications
Tummy tuck patients will need to avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements in the weeks leading up to surgery because these substances can lead to post-operative complications. In addition, if Dr. Potter prescribes any new medications or adjusts any current prescriptions, be sure to have these filled prior to surgery.
Eat a Healthy Diet
In the days and weeks leading up to surgery, patients should eat meals that are well-balanced and nutritious and avoid unusual diets or weight loss medications. Healthy eating helps to improve a patient's overall immune system and ability to heal.
Recovery Planning
In addition to helping you prepare for your procedure, Dr. Potter will also provide specific post-operative instructions:
Arrange for transportation home: No matter if you will be leaving on the day of surgery or staying overnight, you will need to have someone drive you home. Additionally, you should make sure to have someone stay with you during your first night home, at minimum. Some patients find they also need assistance performing routine tasks around the house or running errands for a few days after surgery.
Have recovery items ready before surgery: Recovery items include ice packs, petroleum jelly, a hand-held shower head, and a special chair for bathing. You should also be sure to have a supply of comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Be patient with the recovery process: After surgery, it will take a number of weeks or months for you to feel like yourself again, which can be frustrating for some patients. It is not unusual to have mood swings during recovery from tummy tuck surgery, so we also recommend using friends or family members as a support system.
By following these instructions as closely as possible, you can ensure a speedy recovery and minimize discomfort.
